The launch of Butterflies and Bandicoots: On Becoming Fitzgibbon. Written by local researcher Judy Wakabayashi, this book is proudly supported by Fitzgibbon Community Centre. It explores the people, places and pivotal moments that have shaped this vibrant suburb. Whether you’re a long-time local or new to the neighbourhood, this book is a celebration of everything that makes Fitzgibbon unique.

Author Judy noted:

I’m grateful to everyone who turned out for the launch of Butterflies and Bandicoots: On Becoming Fitzgibbon yesterday at the Community Centre. With the Market in the morning and the gathering for the book launch, yesterday really felt like a celebration of our community. The book launch was kicked off by local town-crier Fred in full regalia, followed by an Acknowledgement of Country by Lisa Caruana. Lisa also spoke of her pride at having her artwork on the book cover. Ann Ingamells, Community Centre super-volunteer, spoke a little about our Community Centre and the book project, then Cr Sandy Landers shared some of her memories of this area.

Some direct descendants of the first white settlers here were present at the launch. I introduced them, then spoke briefly about the book’s origins and shared some images that couldn’t be included in the book. Long-time resident Keith Heinrich showed some photos of Fitzgibbon as it was when he moved here in 1992, as well as aerial images illustrating its dramatic transformation since 1946. Linda Hygate capped off the event with a lively quiz on Fitzgibbon history, followed by refreshments and conversation.

The book is now available on Amazon ($39.98 for the paperback or $13.99 for the Kindle version). If you have stories or photos of Fitzgibbon’s past, we’d love for you to share them on Facebook, through the upcoming gallery on the Community Centre’s website (via the Contact form), or in the Suggestion Box outside the Community Centre.
